Accelerating Workplace Gender Equality Toolkit
Taking action on gender equality in the workplace
The way we see it — every day, we each have a choice: uphold the status quo or replace it with something better.
At GenderWorks Australia, we dedicate our days to accelerating workplace gender equality across both the public and private sector. While we see organisations and individuals working hard — every single day — to challenge gender stereotypes and make their organisations safer for people of all genders, progress can feel agonisingly slow.
Despite significant progress at all levels, the reality is that we still have a way to go.
Equality is no longer negotiable, if it ever was, and we all have a role to play in creating it. If you are wondering what more you can do to take action, you are in the right place.
Workplaces as key settings for change
Not only do we spend a significant portion of our lives at work, but workplaces often serve as microcosms of broader society. They are spaces where people from diverse backgrounds come together, interact, and shape each other's perceptions and experiences. They embody society’s stereotypes, and perpetuate its inequalities. Crucially, we also have the power to change them from the inside out.
By focusing on workplaces, we can directly address ingrained biases and barriers to intersectional gender equality in a way that is both tangible and measurable.
These changes can have wide-reaching impacts, making workplaces fairer and more equal, and shifting societal norms for the better.
Why collaboration unlocks progress
To create any kind of wide-scale change, we must work together. However, too often we see workplaces where people think gender equality is someone else's business, rather than understanding that we each have a role to play in creating a more gender equal world.
Continuing to work in silos enables micro-cultures to flourish and stalls meaningful progress. Instead, taking a whole-of-organisation approach, and working together to share resources, skills, and challenges, helps create an empathetic culture where everyone is safe, respected and celebrated.
Gender equality is too important to sit on any one person, or one team’s, shoulders — it is everyone’s business. And creating gender equality takes all of us — each of us playing our part, doing our bit, and contributing what resources and insights we have to make equality a reality.
