Gender Impact Assessments (GIAs)

Practical support to create better outcomes for everyone

Whether it’s training for your team on how to conduct a GIA or templates to guide the process—we’re here to support you.

What is a Gender Impact Assessment (GIA)?

A Gender Impact Assessment or ‘GIA’ is a powerful planning and assessment tool designed to create fairer and more equitable outcomes for men, women and gender-diverse people.

Under the Victorian Gender Equality Act 2020, ‘defined entities’ must complete a GIA for every policy, program and service with a direct and significant impact on the public, and report on their progress every two years.

The process involves looking at how gender and other attributes (like race, age and ability) impact the experiences and needs of people in your community, and how your work might unintentionally create new barriers or reinforce existing inequalities.

More than a ‘tick and flick’ exercise, the GIA process helps embed an intersectional gender lens into your work and drives greater gender equity and inclusion
